What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is a Sanskrit word meaning “life knowledge.”

It is still the primary medical system used in India despite its ancient origins. You may be tempted to think that because it is ancient that it is no longer useful or is not scientifically sound. But Ayurveda’s deep roots are what make it scientific.

It is based on observation and experimentation, much like our modern scientific method.

Ayurveda observes the balance of five elements within the ecosystem of the body. These elements are managed by entities called doshas. When the doshas become aggravated due to diet, stress, lifestyle, or a combination, a skilled practitioner can observe imbalance and make recommendations to restore balance.

But Ayurveda requires that one with an imbalance take responsibility and make appropriate changes to restore health.

It does not offer a magic pill or antidote. There is no shortcut to a lifetime of vibrant health.

Ayurveda recommends very basic healing therapies including a whole foods diet, plenty of regular exercise, and soothing practices like meditation and yogic breathing that support mental and emotional health.

Ayurveda is the holistic system for understanding your most effective path to longterm health care.

Ayurveda recognizes that our world is composed of 5 elements: earth, water, fire, wind, and ether and, because you’re made of the same components that are found in Nature, your body exhibits the qualities of these 5 elements. The qualities of these elements rule the mind giving it the tendencies of purity, action, and inertia, each of which is important and all can function together in a healthy way. In the body, the elements manifest as the DoshasVata (“vah’-tah”), Pitta (“pih’-tah”), Kapha (“kah’-fah”). The Doshas are responsible for keeping you in good health when they are balanced; when they are unbalanced, they can cause disease.

Daily routine, lifestyle, diet and digestion are of utmost importance in maintaining optimal health. During our consultation, we will have a conversation about these aspects of your life and determine where changes can benefit you the most. In some cases, treatments may be prescribed to address specific concerns.
